Santa Claus and the Argument for Guns

If you haven’t heard this terrible story yet, let me be the one to depress you with it first.

Los Angeles coroner officials remove the body of Bruce Pardo Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, who is suspected of opening fire at a Christmas Eve party in a Covina, Calif. home that subsequently caught fire, leaving nine people dead. Authorities believe the 45-year-old Pardo died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nine bodies were found at the home where the Christmas party took place, some 25 miles from where Pardo’s body was found.

So what does this have to do with Santa Claus? Well, he was wearing a Santa suit at the time he went on this killing rampage. As far as the jolly fat guy goes, that’s about it.

More importantly, what does this have to do with guns? Everything.

Considering how this went down in the ‘great’ liberal state of California, I’m sure there are thousands of senseless idiots shaking their heads, saying things like “if they would just ban guns, these things wouldn’t happen”. The truth is that this logic is more than just faulty, it’s downright stupid.

Since I have no way of knowing what the beliefs of the victims were in regard to firearms in the house, I will make an assumption. I’m willing to bet that there were no guns in the house, or at least none within easy reach of the homeowner or the other lawful occupants of the house at the time of this horrible event.

How can I make this assumption? Easy. I live in Texas. Yes, we have gun crime, but if this crap were to happen around here, some dope in a Santa suit wouldn’t have the chance to off himself…someone would have beat him to the punch. And frankly, that would have been a far better end to this story.

It makes me sick to think that there are people who actually believe that guns (or access to them) cause tragedies like this to happen. If people were allowed to act on their second amendment right to keep and bear arms, there wouldn’t be headlines like “NINE DEAD, GUNMAN COMMITS SUICIDE”. Instead, we’d see things like “GUNMAN KILLED DURING FAILED MASSACRE ATTEMPT”.

Instead of nine dead innocent people, we would have ONE dead criminal. To me, that sounds like a far better outcome.

Just to clear things up, it’s a shame that anyone, including the gunman, had to die. But I know that there’s going to be an uproar by the anti-gun idiots in California over this.

Oh, yesterday I started teaching my six year old son how to shoot. Yes, he’s only shooting an airsoft gun, but he’s learning fundamentals and safety. And yeah, after two days, he knows how to actually hit the target. I feel that everyone needs to know how to shoot a firearm. If not for self preservation, for the ability to defend their family.
