Intervention: A Question

As most of you know, there’s some pretty horrible stuff going on in Iran right now over the election. So far, university students who were peacefully protesting the election “results” were attacked by the opposition. Some were killed.

This is where my question comes in. I’m looking for honest introspection here, not blame. I do want to know however where people stand on this.

In the past, I’ve heard liberal-leaning people get angry at Bush because we weren’t doing anything to help the people being killed in Darfur. Fair enough, I suppose, I’m for staying out of conflict if possible, but helping those who need help.

Today, President Obama said we wouldn’t meddle in the Iran election, essentially eluding to the fact that we would most likely stay completely out of it, even though innocent people were being killed by the regime.

Now, I’m not looking to start a fight, and I don’t want to hear ‘Bush this or Bush that’ on this, but why is it that there aren’t media networks up in arms over this? I understand that this time, it seems that the double standard falls squarely on the shoulders of the media. Perhaps I haven’t given this enough time to play out, and perhaps someone will say something.

For years, America has been the “driving force” of democracy and fairness (more or less), helping countries to defeat oppressive regimes (more or less). So now, why aren’t we going to help Iran?

Is there more to all of this than meets the eye? My mind wandered for a bit today on recent events. Does Obama want Amahdinijad to win this election? If so, why? We know he’s a dangerous man…his thugs shot down college students who, arguably, didn’t pose a threat to anyone!

I don’t understand where this is all going. I’d like to know, though, what you think about this position.

I don’t want to get involved in another war, but if innocents are being killed, what then? Why are we taking a hands off approach to this? Why isn’t the mainstream media ripping Obama to shreds like they did Bush?

Should we help Darfur? Should we help Iran? If so, why and how?

First off the media is reporting this like crazy. Most likely because it was thought up by America. We have had CIA ops over there for a while and it’s not like we haven’t tried to sabotage their government before (see 1953). I called this actually. Before Mahmoud won the election I said, if he wins this election the US will claim he cheated to do it. Which is hilarious because we had vote rigging just nine years ago so we have no moral authority to tell anyone how to run their elections. And again your comparisons are way off. Darfur and Iran are not comparable. Darfur is a genocide and both Bush and Obama should be ashamed for not doing anything about it. Iran is just a big protest with 19 people killed. When you rebel against the government you have to be prepared to face the consequences of those actions. Read Henry David Thoreau.

Iran is just a big protest with 19 people killed. Perhaps. But why were they killed?

Neda was killed for simply being there.

Genocide is murder, right? How many murders does it take to call a situation bad?

The Iranian people are also saying that they believe the vote was rigged, so it’s not just folks in the US that are saying that.

I follow several of the protestors on Twitter, so I get as much info as I can first hand. Also, I’m trying not to post much about it right now so I can 1) get as much info as I can and 2) I don’t have tons of time to dedicate to things, especially when it brings me down to think of what is going on there, to see it first hand from the videos.

It’s just a bad situation. And isn’t it very American to speak out if we don’t like what the Gov is doing? Consequences, sure, but the people of Iran are tired of what they have to live under, and it looks like they are ready to do something about it. We did the same think a couple of hundred years ago, too.

Then let them do it. No need for us to get involved. And no it is not a genocide. A genocide is when people are killed just for being white, or jewish, or homosexual, or whatever. These people are violating the law, no matter how ridiculous we might see the law as. Yes it’s cool if they want to protest the election or even if they want to overthrow the government but it is their fight not ours. I personally think this whole thing was cooked up by the US, I called it before Mahmoud even won the election.
