Schindler’s List was an amazing film. It took one small, seemingly insignificant person’s life out of the second great World War and drew from it a true to life tale of one of the war’s greatest heroes.

The film is based true story of Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party, who saved the lives of more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust. The deeds of this one man made a difference, and the stories of those who survived one of the most horrific times in human history.

The film Schindler’s list, in my opinion, was one of the greatest stories to come out of World War 2. It presents many blatant and disturbing images that once seen are hard to remove from your mind. It tells the story of Oskar Schindler in a very truthful and down to earth light. One of the films strengths is that it doesn’t attempt to hide the character of Oskar Schindler, but presents him just as he was, a womanizer and a man in the Nazi party who profited from the victimized Jews in Poland and Germany.

At first I thought that the film being presented in black and white was a great weakness on the part of the producers; I believed that it might have more impact if it were in color. But as I got deeper into the story of the film I began to realize the significance of the lack of color. I believe in a way it was to remind us that what we were seeing had already past, that what had happened to these people was set in stone and could not be reversed, that this great crime had been done and there was no turning back the clock.

The film was very moving, very disturbing in so many ways. Overall I believe that we should all be disturbed like this much more often. I believe that we would have more compassion for our fellow man if we realized the horrors that were and are committed against mankind daily by other men. The film makes you realize the humanity of these Jews and of the Nazis who followed the orders set by their superiors. We tend to see the Jews as victims and the Nazis as inhuman monsters. Monsters they were, but not inhuman. They too had struggles they did not wish their contemporaries to know of, and while they prescribed to a world-view that is seen by many as cruel, inhumane and detestable, the film makes us realize that even for them it was obey or die along with the Jews. Many felt they had no choice and under other circumstances, would never have entertained the thought of half the actions they committed.

I believe that this film is worth watching and in fact should be required viewing in every college as part of the history courses. I feel so strongly about this because I believe that we are far removed and desensitized of the things that can and did happen when one eloquent and persuasive man was elected to power in hopes for ‘change’ for his country. I believe that more people would realize the dangers that can come of wanting change for changes’ sake. The price is often higher than anyone is prepared to pay.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat’s “ability to inspire” and the “inclusive nature of his campaign.”

“I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I’ll be voting for Sen. Barack Obama,” Powell said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Powell said he was concerned about what he characterized as a recent negative turn of Republican candidate Sen. John McCain’s campaign, such as the campaign’s attempts to tie Obama to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

“I think that’s inappropriate. I understand what politics is about — I know how you can go after one another, and that’s good. But I think this goes too far, and I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow. It’s not what the American people are looking for,” he said.
