The problem was that the goons that detained him could not (or would not) give their authority or reasons for asking the questions. I thought we were in the USA…?

What’s that smell? Oh yeah, it’s the smell of a nice lawsuit being filed. How rediculous is that? If those guys tried to pull that on me at an airport I would have gone postal lol.
